Systems Thinking

Systems Thinking

Looking at the world from a systemic point of view helps you uncover causal relationships that are often hidden from view. This worldview increases leadership effectiveness and learning. It provides a more natural sustainable way of dealing with the world. Faced with a problematic event we often look for the "part" that does not work. Systems Thinking encourages you to look at the whole not just the parts. It assists in making assumptions visible and enables you to determine the underlying influence and structure of a problem, avoiding symptom treatment.

Systems thinking for Leadership and Transformation (Public Workshop)

Description:

Putting out the fire with gasoline"
How often have you found that so-called "solutions" cause even more problems? How often has last year's solution become this year's problem? When a serious problem emerges we often react by fighting the fire without addressing the cause. So we may solve the problem in the short-term but unless we understand what actually caused the problem it is going to recur with varying degrees of frequency and intensity.

Participants:

This intensive workshop is designed for executives, line managers, strategy support staff and internal change agents.

Content:

The Systems Thinking programme consists of theory, practical applications and preparations for embedding Systems Thinking in the workplace.

Theory

  • concept and language of Systems Thinking
  • mental models
  • uncover and map structures
  • systemic interventions

Practical application

Systems Thinking for Leadership and Transformation

Description:

After an introduction to Systems Thinking, similar to the one-day workshop described earlier, this workshop focuses on skills development and how to use this technique to improve leadership and change strategy. The participants learn to differentiate between complexities and concentrate on those areas with a high leverage for change. Much time is spent on individually developed cases: exploring the structure of dynamics from the real workplace and how to influence these.

Participants:

Executives, line managers, internal change agents

Programme Results:
  • map key interdependencies in a system
discover systems structures behind visible events and how they influence
    behaviour
  • apply Systems Thinking in both organisation and family life
acquire a more effective and sustainable approach to leadership and
    organisation renewal
  • learn to communicate the understanding of a specific dynamic from a systemic view
  • develop an infrastructure to embed Systems Thinking in the organisation
Duration:
3 consecutive days, 9h:00 -17h:00

Systems Thinking Introduction

Description:

During this varied and highly interactive workshop the participants learn the basics of thinking systemically.
The workshop includes the 'Beer Game', a production-distribution simulation. From this experience the necessity and essence of Systems Thinking is drawn. The participants gain a deeper understanding of how complex systems operate, how they play a role in a complex system and how these systems influence behaviour.
Working with examples drawn from the participant's own working and family life, they learn how to put the techniques directly into practice.

Participants:

(Cross-functional) management teams, executives and line managers

Programme Results:
  • understand how complex systems operate
  • identify key interdependencies in a system
  • discover systems structures behind visible events and how they influence behaviour
  • apply Systems Thinking in both organisation and family life
  • take the skills and knowledge back into the workplace
Duration:
1 day, 9h:00 -17h:00
